Organizational Patterns - a Key for Agile Systems Development
About the lecture:
Agenda:There is little research about the relative effectiveness of methods for improving software production. Bell Labs research in the 1990s found many inconsistencies and outright errors in approaches based on process improvement. Process improvement methods, like most paths to better software, are too often based on linear thinking, on overly simplistic models, and on local optimization. Without systems thinking it is impossible to make lasting positive organizational development. Organizational patterns are a powerful organizational development technique that builds directly on systems thinking, incremental change, and risk management. This talk explores organizational patterns as a proven way to understand and improve organizational behavior. The approaches are based on a decade of research in about 100 organizations world-wide, and have been used both to fine-tune organizational behavior and to bring entire enterprises from the brink of destruction. They have effective use in corporate mergers, project retrospectives, and most organizational development activities. The talk is based on the popular book, "Organizational Patterns of Agile Software Development:" About the speaker: The presenter, Prof. James O. Coplien, is Senior Agile Coach and Software Architect at Nordija A/S in Copenhagen, and works locally with PacificSoft (http://www.pacificsoft.co.il). He is one of the founders of the pattern discipline, and his work on organizational patterns led to the creation of XP and Scrum. He is also known for his work on software design and particularly on object-oriented design, software patterns, and multi-paradigm design. He is the author of numerous books on design and software organization improvement. He is a visiting professor at University of Manchester. Jim can be contacted at cope@pacificsoft.co.il.
