27/2/2008 - Systems Architecting; process, organization, people aspects

To understand the positioning of the systems architecting process in the organization and to
understand the role and the task of the system architect.
We start with a look at business processes and the position of the architecting process. Then
we look at organizational aspects of systems architecting in relation to project management
and marketing management. We discuss the role, responsibilities, deliverables, and profile of
the system architect.
We will discuss the common challenge of applying product lines, platforms, or re-use strategies.
If sufficient time is left we will discuss road mapping.

28/2/2008 - Systems Architecting means, methods and tools

To have insight in the typical means, methods and tools of the system architect
We start with the means to understand and to capture the understanding of the customer and
the system context. We will discuss Requirements Capturing, CAFCR model, and customer
key drivers. We will reflect on basic working methods. Next we elaborate Multi-view
architecting, story telling, threads-of-reasoning by alternating theory and case.

Detailed Agenda

Who Should Attend:  Managers responsible for the creation of complex multi-disciplinary systems,
Direct colleagues of system architects: project leaders, marketing managers, senior designers,
Potential system architects, system architects, experienced system architects, Potential system
engineers, system engineers, experienced system engineers.

About the Speaker

Gerrit Muller received his Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Amsterdam in 1979.
He worked from 1980 until 1997 at Philips Medical Systems as system architect.
From 1997 to 1999 he was manager System Engineering at ASML.
From 1999 - 2002 he worked at Philips Research.
Since 2003 he is working as senior research fellow at ESI (Embedded Systems Institute). In June 2004 he received his doctorate.
The main focus of his work at ESI is on System Architecture methods and on education of future System Architects. January 2008 Gerrit Muller has started as full professor Systems Engineering at Buskerud University College, in Norway. Special areas of interest are:

Ways to cope with the exponential growth of size and complexity of systems.
Examples of methods to address the growing complexity are product lines and composable architectures.
The human aspects of systems architecting
(which in itself is a crucial factor in coping with the above mentioned growth).
